A customs vessel has left Western Australia on a mission to monitor Japanese whaling in the Southern Ocean, the federal government says

The government has said the Oceanic Viking would spend 20 days gathering video and photographic evidence for a potential international court case against Japanese whaling.

Foreign Minister Stephen Smith on Monday said all decisions about the voyage concerned maximising its potential during the 20 days of activity.

He also said the mission would be “coordinated” with several days of aerial surveillance.
