OK, let's just cut right through it. Carbon sequestration as it currently stands will not work long term.

Why? In the CO2 molecule, we don't breathe this bit "C", but we do breathe this bit "O2", and we know politicians, all things being equal, will not respond quickly enough to stop putting the O2 under the ground.

Solution? Simple, we bubble the smoke stack outputs through algae and then put the algae as a slurry under the ground. We need to make sure we use a benign algae as we do not want a toxic one seeping into our ground water.

This algae can be acclimatized to smoke from the smoke stacks. And to reduce the impact on our water supplies, it can probably be acclimated to to salt water as well. We have a lot of it underground here in Australia. This would allow us to deliver the carbon as a slurry underground and keep the precious oxygen above ground.

The thing that makes this solution so viable is it doesn't change our economy. Everything can go on as normal.

The people at MIT were talking a 40% reduction in GHG emissions, conceivably adding a light in the tubes could increase sequestration by 60 to 80% for now, with better results as the technology evolves. I think the slurry is a better use of the resulting algae production, though there is still merit in t's production as a biofuel.

There is also the possibility of using algae in paper production as well, reducing the need for wood chipping. Something I'd be quite happy about.

Reaching Carbon Balance Through Reduction

One of the key things to realise about reducing carbon emissions is we need to be on the negative side of the emissions equation.

I.E. For balance we need to reach a
1-1=0.
To reduce the current glut of carbon in our atmosphere we need to reduce it below balance to say, 1-5=-5.
For example, by sequestering 5 times our normal carbon output we can reduce our carbon footprint to balance in about 15 years.
Are governments around the world going to do this?
On their current performance I would say "No!"
I would say we are going to have to be the ones who do it ourselves or convince them they are actually going to have to stop talking and get it done..

Because this water for fuel system can cause you to use as much as 50% less petrol, I believe it can dramatically change the amount of CO2 going into our atmosphere.

Not to mention the savings to household budgets, plus when petrol went up so dramatically before it caused an inflation to blow out. If every Australian had one, what effect do you think it might have?

Controversial plans to make cars greener by using fuel made from crops and animal fat will be thrown into doubt this week when British members of parliament are expected to question whether they will do more harm than good.

Biofuels have been hailed as a green alternative to oil by some, but in the US, where there are massive plants converting corn, it has been criticized for making food more expensive and being environmentally unfriendly.

A drama is unfolding in New York City's East River. This summer the Popsicles at a Gristedes supermarket on Roosevelt Island, midstream between Manhattan and Queens, will be kept icy by power generated just a stone's throw from the riverbank.

Anchored 30 feet down, six underwater turbines will turn day and night, driven by the tidal flows in the channel.

At a fish-friendly 35 rpm, the propellers will crank out up to 200 kilowatts of clean power, or roughly half the peak needs of the supermarket.

Veridium Corp has announced its patent-pending technology for the conversion of exhaust carbon dioxide from the fermentation stage of ethanol production facilities back into new ethanol and biodiesel.

Veridium's bioreactor uses an iron-loving blue-green algae species discovered thriving in a hot stream at Yellowstone National Park.

A Target Of 40% Lower Emissions From Ferrari By 2012 Is A Good Start

Ferrari is experimenting with ethanol to help its luxury sports cars produce lower emissions and improve fuel economy.

Ferrari said Monday it developed an engine for an F430 Spider to run on E85, an 85% ethanol blend. The automaker said it produces 5 percent less carbon dioxide emissions and boosts horsepower by 10 percent.

It didn't say how fuel consumption changed. Ferrari's goal is to cut emissions by 40% by 2012.

North Sea Efficient Sink For CO2?

A relatively large number of algae grow in the North Sea. These form the basis for a much richer food chain than that found in the Atlantic Ocean.

Dutch-sponsored researcher Yann Bozec calculated that coastal seas such as the North Sea remove about three times as much carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than would be expected on the basis of their small surface area.

Could This Fix For Global Warming?

Engineers have designed a simple, sustainable and natural carbon sequestration solution using algae. A team at Ohio University created a photo bioreactor that uses photosynthesis to grow algae, passing carbon dioxide over large membranes, placed vertically to save space.

The algae can be harvested and made into biodiesel fuel and feed for animals. A reactor with 1.25 million square meters of algae screens could be up and running by 2010.

Engineered weathering process could mitigate global warming

Researchers at Harvard University and Pennsylvania State University have invented a technology, inspired by nature, to reduce the accumulation of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) caused by human emissions.

By electrochemically removing hydrochloric acid from the ocean and then neutralizing the acid by reaction with silicate (volcanic) rocks, the researchers say they can accelerate natural chemical weathering, permanently transferring CO2 from the atmosphere to the ocean.

Unlike other ocean sequestration processes, the new technology does not further acidify the ocean and may be beneficial to coral reefs.
