With the advent of Biodeisel produced from Algae it is unnecessary and stupid to use food crops as a source for biofuel production. The amounts of algal biodeisel that can be produced on a similar acreage to corn is trully remarkable. With the possibility of an almost zero waste output.
At present their is some talk that this process is currently more expensive, but isn't attempting to shut down of the ecosystem in which we live going a bit far, too?
We need to spend the money needed to make this process work here in Australia and since some algae forms grow in salt water wouldn't that make it even more viable.

Jatropha curcas is an important feedstock for the production of biofuels. Its widespread use in India and Egypt is gaining popularity as a quick growing source of oil-bearing nuts that can be pressed to produce biodiesel products.
Jatropha has also been a crop of choice in development programs in Africa where local villages have grown Jatropha on small plots of land and have hand-pressed the oil for use in generators, sewing machines and small motors.
Glycerin, a by product of Jatropha oil, can also be used to produce soap.

"Just to explain 1-1=0 or serial sequestration again.
Rather than take a fossil fuel and pollute and then require an offset say in the planting of an equivalent number of trees ( not that re-forrestating the earth wouldn't be anything, but a good thing. )
Instead, to use a biofuel, for example biodiesel, and using it ( + 1 amount of CO2 ), then mitigating that pollution by creating the biodiesel again whether from grain or algae ( -1 amount of CO2 ), thus creating a zero balance. You can then do this forever."

It amazes me how these people get elected, if you co-generate the biofuel ( for the pollies, you use the same fuel you are generating, there should be about a zero contribution to Ghg's, because they cancel each other out.
Using algae to produce biodiesel, the algae has to take up the same amount of co2 to produce the same amount of biodeisel it usually produces. Thus 1-1=0.
Oh, but you say what about the green waste. You burn it and run the emission after aclimatisation through the algae, until no co2 is left to return to the environment.
So you balance the emission everytime you produce an equivalent amount of biodeisel, thus zeroing the effect on the environment. Think about it.

The LiveFuels alliance is the largest and most intensely focused group in the country commercializing technology that can make millions of barrels of biocrude oil per day. The initial focus of LiveFuels’ team will be algae-to-biocrude.
Algal oil is similar to soybean oil but can be grown on marginal lands unsuitable for food crops. Thriving on sunlight and CO2, algae can be grown in fresh or brackish water. This makes algae an ideal solution for farmers dealing with issues of agricultural run-off. Moreover, a shortage of vegetable oil has been predicted within 3 to 5 years in the United States, and algal oil could fill the gap for non-edible uses like biofuels.

An example of a current threat which has potentially created a 'cheap' (for the short term) - but unsustainable feedstock is Palm Oil. It has come to our attention that tropical rainforest has been cleared felled in Malaysia and Indonesia to expand palm oil plantations, This practice is not sustainable. Therefore imported palm oil feed stocks cannot ethically be used in Australian production plants.
The policy should be to investigate any feed-stocks deemed unsustainable on application. If it can be proven that the feedstock in question has progressed to the point of being deemed ‘sustainable production’ it would be accepted for limited application. This has been demonstrated in Thailand where palm oil plantations are being established where rubber plantations were once the local cash crop, the rubber price has made it unviable to grow rubber trees so palm plantations are being planted on land that is otherwise abandoned and risks erosion by the elements. Planting something is usually better than doing nothing, especially where high rain fall is the norm. Buying palm oil from such a plantation could have many positive effects.

QUEENSFERRY (Reuters) - The world's richest corporations and finest minds spend billions trying to solve the problem of carbon emissions, but three fishing buddies in North Wales believe they have cracked it.
They have developed a box which they say can be fixed underneath a car in place of the exhaust to trap the greenhouse gases blamed for global warming -- including carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide -- and emit mostly water vapor.
The captured gases can be processed to create a biofuel using genetically modified algae. Dubbed "Greenbox", the technology developed by organic chemist Derek Palmer and engineers Ian Houston and John Jones could, they say, be used for cars, buses, lorries and eventually buildings and heavy industry, including power plants. 
"We've managed to develop a way to successfully capture a majority of the emissions from the dirtiest motor we could find," Palmer, who has consulted for organizations including the World Health Organisation and GlaxoSmithKline, told Reuters.
The three, who stumbled across the idea while experimenting with carbon dioxide to help boost algae growth for fish farming, have set up a company called Maes Anturio Limited, which translates from Welsh as Field Adventure.
With the backing of their local member of parliament they are now seeking extra risk capital either from government or industry: the only emissions they are not sure their box can handle are those from aviation.Labels: biodiesel, environment, greenbox |

Although the box the men currently use for demonstration is about the size of a bar stool, they say they can build one small enough to replace a car exhaust that will last for a full tank of petrol.
The crucial aspect of the technology is that the carbon dioxide is captured and held in a secure state, said Houston. Other carbon capture technologies are much more cumbersome or energy-intensive, for example using miles of pipeline to transport the gas. "The carbon dioxide, held in its safe, inert state, can be handled, transported and released into a controlled environment with ease and a minimal amount of energy required," Houston said at a demonstration using a diesel-powered generator at a certified UK Ministry of Transportation emissions test centre. More than 130 tests carried out over two years at several testing centers have, the three say, yielded a capture rate between 85 and 95 percent. They showed the box to David Hansen, a Labour MP for Delyn, North Wales, who is now helping them."
Based on the information, there is a clear reduction in emissions," Hansen told Reuters."As a result, I'm facilitating meetings with the appropriate UK government agencies, as we want to ensure that British ownership and manufacturing is maintained."The men are also in contact with car-makers Toyota Motor Corp of Japan and General Motors Corp. of the United States. If the system takes off, drivers with a Greenbox would replace it when they fill up their cars and it would go to a bioreactor to be emptied.
Through a chemical reaction, the captured gases from the box would be fed to algae, which would then be crushed to produce a bio-oil. This extract can be converted to produce a biodiesel almost identical to normal diesel.
This biodiesel can be fed back into a diesel engine, the emptied Greenbox can be affixed to the car and the cycle can begin again.
The process also yields methane gas and fertilizer, both of which can be captured separately. The algae required to capture all of Britain's auto emissions would take up around 1,000 acres
The three estimate that 10 facilities could be built across the UK to handle the carbon dioxide from the nearly 30 million cars on British roads.
The inventors say they have spent nearly 170,000 pounds ($348,500) over two years developing the "three distinct technologies" involved and are hoping to secure more funding for health and safety testing.
Not surprisingly, the trio won't show anyone -- not even their wives -- what's inside the box. After every demonstration they hide its individual components in various locations across North Wales and the technology is divided into three parts, with each inventor being custodian of one section.
"Our three minds hold the three keys and we can only unlock it together," said Houston.
